3, 22 The process is relatively simple and relies on the electrostatic repulsion of a polymer solution to form polymer fibers. 1, 3 The technique is capable of producing long, continuous fibers ranging from 3 nm to 10 μm in diameter. 15Įlectrospinning is a time- and cost-efficient technique to produce polymer fibers and is the most commonly used method to produce fiber meshes in tissue engineering. 21 These unique mechanical properties are useful for modulating cell behavior as well as providing adequate tension and strength to resist the forces from the cell cytoskeleton. 20 This might especially be true of electrospun fibers, where flow-induced crystallization is thought to occur during spinning. Although this occurrence is not fully understood, one explanation is that the decrease in fiber diameter leads to an increase in macromolecular chain alignment within the fibers, 17– 19 with nanofibers of a smaller diameter having a higher degree of crystallinity. Specifically, the tensile modulus, 13– 16 tensile strength, 15 and shear modulus 17 have been shown to increase as fiber diameter decreases. 12įurther, polymeric nanofibers have been shown to display unique mechanical properties. Additionally, the nanofibrous constructs were found to selectively enhance the adsorption of specific proteins, such as fibronectin and vitronectin, 11 which is significant as fibronectin is one protein known to mediate cell adhesion and to bind many growth factors. For example, poly( l-lactic acid) (PLLA) fibers with diameters ranging from 50 to 500 nm were shown to have four times higher rates of protein adsorption than porous PLLA constructs with macroscale features. 3, 10 Compared to macroscale surfaces, nanofibers have shown higher rates of protein adsorption, a key mediator in cell attachment to a biomaterial surface. 4 The small diameter of nanofibers closely matches the size scale of extracellular matrix (ECM) fibers, allowing them to be used as biomimetic scaffolds, 6– 8 and the high surface area-to-volume ratio is ideal for cell attachment 9 and drug loading. In this field, the term “nanofiber” is typically used to describe fibers with diameters ranging from 1 to 1000 nm. The unique properties of polymeric nanofibers make them a valuable tool to tissue engineers. Finally, bioactive factor loading and applications of polymeric nanofibers in the fields of bone, cartilage, ligament and tendon, cardiovascular, and neural tissue engineering will be presented to demonstrate the utility of nanofibers in tissue engineering. 5 This review discusses information not previously reviewed with regard to the fabrication of polymeric nanofibers in the context of its effect on the physical properties of nanofibrous scaffolds, relevant to tissue engineering, including fiber degradation and control of pore structure and cell infiltration. The popularity of nanofibers is demonstrated by the number of reviews focusing on their production, 1– 3 application, 1, 2, 4 and interaction with cells. Since polymeric nanofibers are well suited for such applications, they are gaining popularity in tissue engineering and have been used in attempts to regenerate a variety of tissues. Although a wide range of scaffold materials are available, polymeric scaffolds are commonly employed to support tissue growth and to serve as carriers for bioactive factor delivery. Scaffolds generally serve as the foundation for many strategies to promote tissue formation. T issue engineering approaches typically involve three key elements: scaffolds, cells, and biochemical and/or mechanical stimuli.

MintAI uses the help of advanced AI and cloud computing capabilities to offer world-class image processing services to its users. For them and those who want to revive old images, you can use the MintAI app. Not every moment is meant for photos, and not everyone knows to take them without shaking the camera. But the images generated have a pretty big watermarked logo that cannot be left unnoticed, and the only way to remove it is to subscribe to premium. To save the image or share it on Instagram, you have to watch another ad that can be skipped after 5 seconds, and hence I didn’t find it much annoying. Mind you, I used a blurry image with which other apps were struggling, but it was not an issue for Pixelup as it enhanced the image without breaking a sweat! It could detect human subjects in the image and improve the detail. With this application, you can also create AI avatars, color black and white photos, animate them, and even de-scratch old photos.Īs for the results too, I was impressed by how good the AI was. Don’t worry you can skip ads just after 5 seconds. Instead of having free credits given by some other apps, Pixelup requires you to watch an ad to get the image enhancement done. The app has a very good UI that helps you locate each feature offered and gives instructions on what things you should ensure to get the best results. Some of them aren't bad, but a lot of them are, in my opinion. But I do have an issue with traversal, or rather, the side content in this game - which is primarily based around the age old, fetch quest design. There are no mounts or anything, but there's the standard, fast travel option, and there's Luffy's iconic, arm swinging that's used a lot at certain points in the game, and there's a second fast travel alternative that I hardly ever used because it's hardly ever available. The traversal options in the game aren't bad at all, they're actually pretty decent. If you don't enjoy the music in this game, then you have pretty high standards :P Probably my biggest issue with One Piece Odyssey is it's traversal. And that's a fair opinion, but the soundtrack was composed by the guy behind the Dark Souls soundtrack, as well as the "Tales of." series, to mention a few. We evaluated potential confounding due to population stratification using a multivariate analysis, and we report clinically meaningful measures of effect.īlood-type frequencies vary across ancestry groups 56, so we evaluated the confounding effect of ancestry by adjusting for race/ethnicity (proxies for ancestry). We compared both ABO and Rh(D) blood types, and we investigated initial infection status and two severe COVID-19 outcomes: intubation and death. In this study, we sought to understand the association between SARS-CoV-2 infection/COVID-19 and blood type using electronic health record (EHR) data from NewYork-Presbyterian/Columbia University Irving Medical Center (NYP/CUIMC) hospital in New York City, USA. Other studies have found evidence that Rh-positive individuals are protected against the effects of latent toxoplasmosis 51, though Toxoplasma gondii is a eukaryotic parasite 52, not a virus like SARS-CoV-2. For example, hemolytic disease of the newborn is a concern when Rh(D) is mismatched between mother and offspring 50. Like ABO, Rh type is important for type compatibility and immune response. Rh(D) phenotypes (positive and negative Rh blood types) are associated with very few diseases compared to ABO 49. pylori 45, Norwalk virus 46, hepatitis B virus 47, and N. In addition, previous work has identified associations between ABO blood groups and a number of different infections or disease severity following infections, including SARS-CoV-1 43, P. The numerous associations between conditions and both blood type and COVID-19 provide reason to believe that true associations may exist between blood type and morbidity and mortality due to COVID-19. For example, coagulopathy is a common issue for COVID-19 patients 35, 36, 37, 38, 39, 40, 41, and risk of venous thromboembolism must be carefully managed 42. These conditions are also relevant for COVID-19. A 2012 meta-analysis found that, in addition to individual variants, a non-O blood type is among the most important genetic risk factors for venous thromboembolism 34. For example, genome-wide association studies have associated variants within ABO to activity of the angiotensin converting enzyme 7, red blood cell count, hemoglobin concentration, hematocrit 8, 9, 10, 11, von Willebrand factor 12, 13, 14, 15, myocardial infarction 16, 17, coronary artery disease 17, 18, 19, 20, 21, ischemic stroke 13, 19, 22, type 2 diabetes 23, 24, 25, and venous thromboembolism 26, 27, 28, 29, 30, 31, 32, 33. This gene is associated with a number of other traits, including risk factors for COVID-19 morbidity and mortality. The ABO blood type trait reflects polymorphisms within the ABO gene. Conversely, however, they estimated lower odds of mechanical ventilation for all non-O types, though the estimated odds ratios were not statistically significant at the 5% level for this outcome. found 6 a higher risk of COVID-19 among A and a lower risk among O blood types. Similarly, using a meta-analysis of data from Italy and Spain, Ellinghaus et al. found a greater proportion of A and a lower proportion of O blood types among COVID-19 patients, relative to the general populations of Wuhan and Shenzhen 5. Using data from Wuhan and Shenzhen, Zhao et al. Recent work has demonstrated an association between ABO blood types and COVID-19 risk. A number of risk factors for COVID-19 morbidity and mortality are known, including age, sex, smoking, hypertension, diabetes, and chronic cardiovascular and respiratory diseases 3, 4. As of August 22, New York City has recorded 228,144 confirmed infections and 19,014 deaths 2. Within the United States, New York suffered among the worst outbreaks during the early phases of the pandemic. The novel Coronavirus disease (COVID-19, caused by the SARS-CoV-2 virus) has spread rapidly across the globe and has caused over 21.1 million confirmed infections and over 761,000 deaths worldwide as of Aug1. |
